At Ameralloy Steel, one of our primary goals is to provide customers with the highest quality stainless steel currently on the market. We stock and distribute stainless steel 309, one of our specialty metals. Both austenitic 309 and 309S are austenitic chromium-nickel steel alloys. Their utilization is required for environments that take place at high temperatures. Alloys 309 and 309S, thanks to the high amounts of chromium and nickel they contain, are exceptionally resistant to corrosion; they also have excellent heat resistance, and they provide strong strength at room temperature and increased temperatures while still maintaining their high tensile strength. Alloy 309S has a lower carbon content than its predecessor to improve its weldability and reduce carbide precipitation.

Characteristics of Stainless Steel 309

Machinability:

The machining process for this alloy is identical to that used for stainless steel type 304. It will machine at high speeds, and its chips are stringy. Only by utilizing chip breakers and keeping the tool in a cutting position is the only way to cut this material when machining.

Welding:

There are processes for fusion welding and resistance welding that produces the best results when combined with the hardness of grade 309 stainless steel. The oxyacetylene technique is not recommended for use while welding this alloy.

Formability:

It is not difficult to form 309 or 309S material, stamp it, or draw stainless steel type 309/S because of the material’s ductility and malleability. It is necessary to anneal it in certain situations. The Type 309 material retains its nonmagnetic and incredibly stable properties even after being cold processed. Because this grade of 300 austenitic steel has a lower elongation than the other 300 austenitic grades, manufacturing it is more challenging.
